The National Navigation Award Scheme is for those that want nationally accredited recognition for their map reading skill.  Learn essential map reading skills, develop skills to  navigation with confidence and learn strategies by progressing through the award scheme levels. A rewarding and fun way to learn  how to use a map and compass.

These are 2 day courses, whether Bronze or Silver. (a combined 3 day Silver is available on request)

Locations vary, but are often in Saddleworth, South Pennines, The High Peak or the Lake District

Open The Map courses are practical  sessions aimed at those with little or no experience of using a map and compass. They usually cover between 4 – 6 miles following paths and tracks, covering the following areas

  •   Introduction to the map
  •   Understanding scales and map symbols
  •   Orientate the map with and without a compass
  •   A basic understanding of contours and matching landforms
  •   Measuring distance on and off the map
  •   Grid references
  •   Direction of travel and using land features
  •   Introduction to setting compass bearings
  •   Choosing simple, safe routes
  •   Understanding the Countryside Code and access rights
  •   Understanding the weather and the role it can play
  •   The right equipment to take with you
  •   How to be safe outdoors.

Duration 1 full day  – usually 09:30hrs – 16:30hrs

Learn how to navigate in low visibility situations with this practical and challenging course which addresses the essential and often neglected skills of navigating in the dark or poor visibility. The course will teach you how to manage the changing conditions which can be unsettling an challenging.  

Suitable for those with some basic navigation experience and would like to develop more advanced techniques.

Learning outcomes:

  •   Choosing the right navigation strategies and routes
  •   Relocation and measuring distance on and off the map
  •   Develop micro navigation skills
  •   Planning, preparation and preserving night vision
  •   Emergency procedures and safety

Duration:

3.5 hours approx - we vary the start time of the course depending on the time of year and sunset times. The course is usually only offered from October-March.
